Recent studies reveal a shift in church attendance patterns, with younger generations leading the way. Here's what's trending¹ ²:- Gen Z: Born between 1997 and 2012, Gen Z attends church an average of 1.9 times per month, or roughly 23 times a year. This generation is showing a renewed openness to faith, with many finding their way back into church communities.- Millennials: Born between 1981 and 1996, Millennials attend church an average of 1.8 times per month, or about 22 times a year. Like Gen Z, Millennials are driving growth in church attendance, with non-white Millennials playing a significant role in this trend.
Key Findings:- Increased Attendance: Both Gen Z and Millennials have nearly doubled their church attendance since 2020, when they averaged about one weekend per month.- Older Generations: In contrast, older adults have seen a consistent decline in attendance over the past 25 years. Baby Boomers and Elders now attend church about 1.4 times per month, down from 2.0 and 2.3 times, respectively, in 2000.- Implications for Churches: These shifts open doors for churches to innovate and engage with younger generations. Prioritizing relational touchpoints, digital engagement, and clear discipleship pathways can help build a resilient and lasting faith.
Expert Insights:- "The fact that young people are showing up more frequently than before is not a typical trend," says Daniel Copeland, Barna's vice president of research. "This data represents good news for church leaders and adds to the picture that spiritual renewal is shaping Gen Z and Millennials today."
Keep in mind that while attendance is up, it's still irregular, with many attending church only about two out of every five weekends.

A report from Gloo earlier this year found “that belief in Jesus among Americans has reached a decade-high level since 2013.”

“It’s heartening to see that more people are finding and maintaining a personal relationship with Jesus, especially among younger generations. The other trends in this report really speak to the question, ‘How can we, as parents, friends, neighbors and church leaders, show up well for others?’ This research helps us better understand where we might start,” said Gloo’s chief solutions officer Brad Hill.
