New diagnostic and treatment hope for mental illnesses
Romans 5:1-5
Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

SPECT and fMRI both can show brain "function" fMRI (functional MRI, magnetic resonance imaging) utilizes the BOLD or "blood oxygen level dependent" contrast mechanism. There is no injection needed unless other MRI scans are being done. Brain "activity" is determined by looking for signal intensity changes that are correlated to relative metabolic need for oxygen. In general fMRI is not yet used clinically as much as it is for research. SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) utilizes a radioactively labeled chemical tracer. The tracer is injected and accumulates in body tissue. Depending on the exact tracer the amount of "counts" detected from the anatomy corresponds to the amount of metabolism and access (perfusion) to the given tissue. Other options depending on what doctors are looking for include PET and MEG.
