This year is a rare occasion when Ash Wednesday coincides with St. Valentines Day. It last happened in 1945 (preceded by 1934 and 1923) and will happen again in 2029.

Maybenot one, but three, St. Valentines?

Roman Catholic priest William Saunders wrote in 2003 of his research on St.Valentines:

https://www.catholiceducation.org/en/culture/catholic-contributions/history-of-st-valentine.html

Heconcludes, “On this Valentine's day, looking to the example of this greatsaint, each person should offer again his love to the Lord, for only by doingso can he properly love those who are entrusted to his care and any otherneighbor. Each person should again pledge his love to those loved ones, prayingfor their intentions, promising fidelity to them, and thanking them for theirlove in return. Never forget Jesus said, "This is my commandment: love oneanother as I have loved you. There is no greater love than this: to lay downone's life for one's friends" (Jn 15:12-13). St. Valentine fulfilled thiscommand, and may we do the same.”

Peace,Happy Valentines Day, and, Ash Wednesday blessings,
Joe
