The reality and nearness of God
Are angels real? Morris Mitchell, the first president of Friends World College (Est. 1965), was a man of deep spirituality. One evening about dusk he was walking home from town on a lonely road when he saw a large man walking toward him. The man appeared very agitated and angry at Mitchell. He accosted Mitchell with some angry remarks, but Mitchell responded gently and invited the man to walk into town with him and join him for supper. The man was not easily persuaded, but eventually he agreed, and over the meal, he gradually calmed down. The man finally talked of how angry he had been. In fact, he said to Mitchell, “I sure was mad, and I wanted to kill you. I would have, too, if you hadn’t had that big guy with you.” (Martha Holden, “Angels: A Personal Response,”Friends Journal, December 15, 1981, 10).
Maybe angels should be taken literally!
