Subject: [propertalk.topic] Sermon for Palm Sunday

Dear Friends,

Tomorrow's sermon is entitled “Christ, Our Passover Is Sacrificed for
Us” or “It Is ACCOMPLISHED!.” Because so few people attend Good
Friday services, I often focus on the crucifixion on Palm Sunday, and
tell the entire outline of the passion events. The outline I use,
which I’ve shared before, follows.

1) Palm Sunday: Jesus entered Jerusalem in peace, not as a conquering
warrior
2) Cried over city
3) Went in temple
---a) Overturned money-changers tables and chased out cheating animal
salespeople
---b) Taught daily
------i) Children- “Hosanna!”
4) Thursday: Passover meal (i.e. Last Supper)- last meal with
disciples
---a) Instituted Eucharist
---b) Footwashing
---c) Judas- took off to find high priest
5) After supper: Jesus and disciples to Garden of Gethsemane
---a) Three best friends slept
---b) Jesus prayed “that this cup might pass from me”
------i) “Not my will, but Thine be done”
---c) Judas kissed Jesus to identify him
------i) Temple police arrested Jesus
------ii) To High Priest and Sanhedrin
6) Trial: High Priest in front of Sanhedrin
---a) High Priest’s servant slapped Jesus
7) Jesus taken to Pilate
---a) Back and forth between Pilate and Herod
---b) Mob: “We want Barabbas!”
---c) Pilate washes his hands
8) Torture begins
---a) Whipped (braided leather whip with lead tops)- soldiers
---b) Mocked- soldiers
------i) Purple robe
------ii) Crown of thorns
------iii) Blindfolded
------iv) “Prophesy! Who hit you?!”
---c) Put own clothes back on
---d) Carried beam uphill (Mt. Calvary)
------i) Weak- kept falling
------ii) Simon of Cyrene (West Africa) carried cross for him
---e) Got to the top of the hill- garbage dump (compost heap for
generations of inhabitants of Jerusalem)
------i) Probably stripped naked
------ii) Laid on the beam- nailed hands
---f) Probably lifted to permanent vertical upright beam with
protruding spike to hold horizontal cross-beam
------i) Probably dropped on vertical beam, tearing hand wounds
------ii) Nailed feet, probably bending knees so feet couldn’t help
diaphragm muscles with breathing, thus allowing death by suffocation
---g) Inscription over (or around) neck
------i) Jesus of Nazareth- King of the Jews
---h) Naked: taunted and shamed
------i) Bitten by flies, mosquitoes
9) Said:
---a) First: “Father, forgive them- they don’t know what they are
doing.”
---b) Second: “I thirst!”
---c) Third (To the penitent thief): “Today you will be with me in
Paradise.”
---d) Fourth (To the disciple John, so his mother is well cared for):
“Son, behold your mother; mother, behold your son.”
---e) Fifth (When suffering became more intense): “My God, why have
you forsaken me?”
---f) Sixth: “Father, into your hands I commend my Spirit.”
---g) Seventh (As he died): “It is finished/accomplished!”
------i) What is accomplished?
---------(1) “God so loved the world....save it.”
---------(2) “How wonderful beyond our knowing that to redeem a slave
You gave a Son!”
---------(3) “Christ, our Passover is sacrificed for us.” (Break
unconsecrated bread)
------ii) It is accomplished!

For anyone who is interested, this sermon and updated African-American
wisdom statements are posted on our parish web site. The address is:
