I guess I can't tell this story since it is so recent and so close, but perhaps someone else could reflect on it.
A few Sundays ago a youngish woman came to me and asked if we, our church, could shelter people; she was homeless, made only about $75 per week working as a clerk at the Mall since she could only get work on a Monday and on weekends. (I get asked this a lot from the group that comes to our Sunday Vespers, actually, as it is followed by a free meal.) Her landlady had evicted her because she could no longer pay her rent--she had lost her full time job. I explained that Operation Warm Heart doesn't begin until December 1, and that our various (15) churches were not yet sheltering folk. I recommended she go to the Coalition to House the Homeless early Monday morning, they are closed on weekends, and try to get help there as sometimes they have funds to put people into local motels. After the meal, I saw her with several other young women who were at the meal and asked if she had gotten any place to say. "Oh, she's going to stay with me," one of them replied. "Wonderful!" I responded. Then I wondered if maybe I was a bit goatish.
