When Jesus talks about being glorified he is talking about being crucified.
The cross is the sign of his glorification. (cf. 12:20-36) The glory of God's love for
the world is to be seen in the cross (3:16).

South African theologian and Methodist bishop Peter Storey notes how fond Christians are of saying-especially during Holy Week perhaps-that "God sent Jesus to die on the cross." But that way of putting it, says Storey, robs Jesus of his humanity, his capacity for moral choice; Jesus, on this view, is little more than a programmed robot, marching passively to a preordained fate. God sent Jesus into the world not to die, Storey reminds us, but to love.

...treat one another with love even if it is difficult, or it runs counter to prevailing norms, or if we cannot see the outcome, or even if doing so does not entirely make sense?

He gives them "a new commandment" (v. 34): while Judaism required one to love one's neighbour as oneself, Jesus is his follower's example of love. This mutual love will show who are his followers

In the cross event, Jesus will return in glory to the Father's presence: "Where I am going you are not able to come" (13:33b).

When was the Son of Man glorified? It was at this meal with his disciples when he chose to be a servant and to give thanks [GN2168 eucharisteo] that his body and blood could become a gift for God. Our greatest glory will likewise be found in the moments we allow ourselves to be "blessed and broken" for God and specifically in service to his people.

So important is it for Jesus that he says it is a "new" commandment, even though it is something that is as old as Leviticus (19:18). It is "new" in the sense that its centrality is heightened in Jesus and that it will be love "as I have loved you," i.e., in the manner demonstrated by Jesus.

...these verses which ask us to love as Jesus has loved us, might lead one to deal with the popular phrase: "What Would Jesus Do?" I dislike that question because we are not Jesus. He was unique. What Jesus did was to suffer and die for all of sinful humanity. I can't do that. However, I think that it is appropriate to struggle with the question, "What would God have me do at this time and in this situation?"

Surely I am allowed one holdout, one person whom I may judge unworthy of love. But the commandment has no loophole, it demands that we let go of our pet hates, the ones we clutch like teddy bears.

In the small town where I live people often blame parents for the way their children turn out. If the children are mean or rude or disrespectful, the leading citizens of the community will cluck their tongues and say, "The acorn doesn't fall far from the tree."

I have unknowingly been enrolled in another kind of school for deacons as I have tended to the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of these little ones. If deacons are to be "in the world," serving "all people, particularly the poor, the weak, the sick, and the lonely,"1 then it can be very good practice to learn servanthood by parenting little children.

Verse 35 says, "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." This new way of life will set us apart from the rest of the world, because man's natural tendency is to love himself and try to manipulate and control his world to meet his own needs.
