 I was in the seminary for 12 years and cannot criticize the celibacy requirement,since I can see the advantages of the training I received. My predecessor and his predecessor were all married and so am IMy general conclusion is that in a perfect world celibacy should be required because of ther impetus is gives to a greater spiritual life...but since this isn't a perfect world optional celibacy would be the ideal.

Remember that Jesus Ordained Peter (Cephas), and probably some of the others mentioned, and Peter was already married at the time of his Ordination, because he was married before it.

Mat 8:14 And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother laid, and sick of a fever.

Then, Paul requires:

1Ti 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Phl 4:8
