[Oldcath-l] What to do

Had not seen much on the list so I thought I would throw a problem out for
discussion.

I have a Deacon that has had a series of health challenges over the past
year. I waited to hear from the Deacon, sent 2 official letters one removing
them from the seminary program, the second saying the deacon would be put on
our inactive list by a certain date, along with regular Church mailings. I
heard nothing.

I thought to give it one more try and emailed. This time received a
response! We met and went through the regular its not my fault stuff and I
was sick. I asked the Deacon what was I to do? And of course they want to
pick up right where they left off (after almost a year of absence) and study
for ordination.

So I asked the vocation question, “Why do you want to be Ordained.” What
followed was on going ramblings of about 5 minutes which boils down to, that
it is the highest and most amazing thing a person could do to bring down the
God-head and for worship and the fact that the Deacon just HAD to be able to
do this, then at the last second as if an after thought, “so I can do this
for people.”

Obviously this person is in no way ready to even be a Deacon much less a
priest.

What are your recommendations? Should I give this Deacon a chance? Help them
to see that a vocation is not about self but about God and his people? Or
just drop them?

Thanks for all of your thoughts on this issue!
